Why the DCEU needs a Trench movie

When news broke that DC wouldn't be moving forward (at least not yet) with the Aquaman spinoff The Trench in favor of other projects, I was disappointed.
Here's why:
I don't want DC to fall into the same trap Marvel has (I don't mean overall- MCU films are insanely well-written and very interconnected). What I'm talking about is when they introduce something and then skate past it so it's not necessarily mentioned in future installments.
Take, for instance, cellular biologist Dr. Samuel Sterns from Incredible Hulk (or Betty Ross, for that matter).
And, for that instance, Rio, which was an important location in the first half of that film, wasn't touched on again from that point. So we don't know how Rio's faring in the scheme of the MCU.
Gulmira was first (and last) seen in 2008's Iron Man- first mentioned as Yinsen's home village and then seen when Tony Stark defeats the terrorists- but there's no mention of it from that point on.

So with this in mind, why would DC introduce a section of the ocean filled with horrifying-looking creatures and then cancel a film that would talk more about it?
